Early search engines, such as <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Altavista">Altavista</a> and <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Infoseek">Infoseek</a>, adjusted their algorithms in an effort to prevent webmasters from manipulating rankings.<span></span><span></span></span></span><br />

websites a user seeks. In this diagram, if each bubble represents a web
site, programs sometimes called <i>spiders</i> examine which sites link

important and what the user is searching for. In this example, since
website B is the recipient of numerous inbound links, it ranks more
highly in a web search. And the links "carry through", such that website
C, even though it only has one inbound link, has an inbound link from a
highly popular site (B) while site E does not. Note: percentages are

</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">To avoid undesirable content in the search indexes, webmasters can
instruct spiders not to crawl certain files or directories through the
standard <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Robots.txt">robots.txt</a>

explicitly excluded from a search engine's database by using a <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Meta tag">meta tag</a> specific to robots. When a search engine visits a site, the robots.txt located in the <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Root directory">root directory</a>

instruct the robot as to which pages are not to be crawled. As a search

crawl pages a webmaster does not wish crawled. Pages typically prevented
from being crawled include login specific pages such as shopping carts

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span class="mw-headline" id="White_hat_versus_black_hat_techniques">White hat versus black hat techniques</span></span></span></h2>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">
</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">SEO techniques can be classified into two broad categories:
techniques that search engines recommend as part of good design, and
those techniques of which search engines do not approve. The search
engines attempt to minimize the effect of the latter, among them <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Spamdexing">spamdexing</a>. Industry commentators have classified these methods, and the practitioners who employ them, as either <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="White hat (computer security)">white hat</a> SEO, or <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Black hat hacking">black hat</a> SEO.<span></span><span></span>
White hats tend to produce results that last a long time, whereas black
hats anticipate that their sites may eventually be banned either
temporarily or permanently once the search engines discover what they
are doing.<span></span><span></span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">
</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">An SEO technique is considered white hat if it conforms to the search
engines' guidelines and involves no deception. As the search engine
guidelines<span> </span><span></span><span></span><span></span><span></span><span></span>are not written as a series of rules or commandments, this is an
important distinction to note. White hat SEO is not just about following
guidelines, but is about ensuring that the content a search engine
indexes and subsequently ranks is the same content a user will see.
White hat advice is generally summed up as creating content for users,
not for search engines, and then making that content easily accessible
to the spiders, rather than attempting to trick the algorithm from its
intended purpose. White hat SEO is in many ways similar to web
development that promotes accessibility,<span> </span><span></span> although the two are not identical.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">
</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Black hat SEO
attempts to improve rankings in ways that are disapproved of by the
search engines, or involve deception. One black hat technique uses text
that is hidden, either as text colored similar to the background, in an
invisible <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Span and div">div</a>,
or positioned off screen. Another method gives a different page
depending on whether the page is being requested by a human visitor or a
search engine, a technique known as <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Cloaking">cloaking</a>.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">
</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Another category sometimes used is <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Grey hat">grey hat SEO</a>.
This is in between black hat and white hat approaches where the methods
employed avoid the site being penalised however do not act in producing
the best content for users, rather entirely focused on improving search
engine rankings.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">
</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Search engines may penalize sites they discover using black hat
methods, either by reducing their rankings or eliminating their listings
from their databases altogether. Such penalties can be applied either
automatically by the search engines' algorithms, or by a manual site
review. One example was the February 2006 Google removal of both <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="BMW">BMW</a> Germany and <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Ricoh">Ricoh</a> Germany for use of deceptive practices.<span></span><span></span>Both companies, however, quickly apologized, fixed the offending pages, and were restored to Google's list.<span></span><span></span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">
</span></span><h2>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span class="mw-headline" id="As_a_marketing_strategy">As a marketing strategy</span></span></span></h2>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">
</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">SEO is not an appropriate strategy for every website, and other
Internet marketing strategies can be more effective like paid
advertising through pay per click <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Pay per click">(PPC)</a> campaigns, depending on the site operator's goals.<span></span><span></span>
A successful Internet marketing campaign may also depend upon building
high quality web pages to engage and persuade, setting up <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Web analytics">analytics</a> programs to enable site owners to measure results, and improving a site's <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Conversion rate">conversion rate</a>.<span></span><span></span></span></span><br />

</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">SEO may generate an adequate <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Return on investment">return on investment</a>.
However, search engines are not paid for organic search traffic, their
algorithms change, and there are no guarantees of continued referrals.
Due to this lack of guarantees and certainty, a business that relies
heavily on search engine traffic can suffer major losses if the search
engines stop sending visitors.<span></span><span></span>
Search engines can change their algorithms, impacting a website's
placement, possibly resulting in a serious loss of traffic. According to
Google's CEO, Eric Schmidt, in 2010, Google made over 500 algorithm
changes – almost 1.5 per day.<span></span><span></span> It is considered wise business practice for website operators to liberate themselves from dependence on search engine traffic.<span></span><span></span></span></span><br />

</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">As of 2009, there are only a few large markets where Google is not

In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page),
and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more
visitors it will receive from the search engine's users. SEO may target
different kinds of search, including <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Image search">image search</a>, <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Local search (Internet)">local search</a>, <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Video search">video search</a>, <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Academic databases and search engines">academic search</a>,<span> </span><span></span> news search and industry-specific <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Vertical search">vertical search</a> engines.</span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">
</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">As an <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Internet marketing">Internet marketing</a>
strategy, SEO considers how search engines work, what people search
for, the actual search terms or keywords typed into search engines and
which search engines are preferred by their targeted audience.
Optimizing a website may involve editing its content, <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="HTML">HTML</a> and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Web crawler">indexing activities</a> of search engines. Promoting a site to increase the number of <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Backlinks">backlinks</a>, or inbound links, is another SEO tactic.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">
</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">The plural of the abbreviation SEO can also refer to "search engine optimizers", those who provide SEO services.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></span>Webmasters
and content providers began optimizing sites for search engines in the
mid-1990s, as the first search engines were cataloging the early <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="World Wide Web">Web</a>. Initially, all webmasters needed to do was to submit the address of a page, or <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Uniform Resource Locator">URL</a>, to the various engines which would send a "<a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Web crawler">spider</a>" to<br />
<a name='more'></a> "crawl" that page, extract links to other pages from it, and return information found on the page to be <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Index (search engine)">indexed</a>.<span></span><span></span>
The process involves a search engine spider downloading a page and
storing it on the search engine's own server, where a second program,
known as an <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Search engine indexing">indexer</a>,
extracts various information about the page, such as the words it
contains and where these are located, as well as any weight for specific
words, and all links the page contains, which are then placed into a
scheduler for crawling at a later date.<br />
Site owners started to recognize the value of having their sites
highly ranked and visible in search engine results, creating an
opportunity for both <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="White hat (computer security)">white hat</a> and <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Black hat hacking">black hat</a> SEO practitioners. According to industry analyst <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Danny Sullivan (technologist)">Danny Sullivan</a>, the phrase "search engine optimization" probably came into use in 1997.<span></span><span></span> On May 2, 2007,<span></span><span></span>Jason Gambert attempted to trademark the term SEO by convincing the Trademark Office in Arizona<span> ..</span><span></span>that SEO is a "process" involving manipulation of keywords, and not a
"marketing service." The reviewing attorney basically bought his
incoherent argument that while "SEO" can't be trademarked when it refers
to a generic process of manipulated keywords, it can be a service mark
for providing "marketing services...in the field of computers. <span></span><span></span><br />
Early versions of search <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Algorithm">algorithms</a> relied on webmaster-provided information such as the keyword <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Meta tag">meta tag</a>, or index files in engines like <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Aliweb">ALIWEB</a>.
Meta tags provide a guide to each page's content. Using meta data to
index pages was found to be less than reliable, however, because the
webmaster's choice of keywords in the meta tag could potentially be an
inaccurate representation of the site's actual content. Inaccurate,
incomplete, and inconsistent data in meta tags could and did cause pages
to rank for irrelevant searches. Web content providers also manipulated a number of attributes within
the HTML source of a page in an attempt to rank well in search engines.<span></span><br />
By relying so much on factors such as <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Keyword density">keyword density</a>
which were exclusively within a webmaster's control, early search
engines suffered from abuse and ranking manipulation. To provide better
results to their users, search engines had to adapt to ensure their <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Search engine results page">results pages</a>
showed the most relevant search results, rather than unrelated pages
stuffed with numerous keywords by unscrupulous webmasters. Since the
success and popularity of a search engine is determined by its ability
to produce the most relevant results to any given search, poor quality
or irrelevant search results could lead users to find other search
sources. Search engines responded by developing more complex ranking
algorithms, taking into account additional factors that were more
difficult for webmasters to manipulate. Graduate students at <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Stanford University">Stanford University</a>, <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Larry Page">Larry Page</a> and <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Sergey Brin">Sergey Brin</a>,
developed "Backrub," a search engine that relied on a mathematical
algorithm to rate the prominence of web pages. The number calculated by
the algorithm, <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="PageRank">PageRank</a>, is a function of the quantity and strength of <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Inbound link">inbound links</a>.<span></span><span></span>
PageRank estimates the likelihood that a given page will be reached by a
web user who randomly surfs the web, and follows links from one page to
another. In effect, this means that some links are stronger than
others, as a higher PageRank page is more likely to be reached by the
random surfer.<br />
Page and Brin founded <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Google">Google</a> in 1998.<span></span><span></span>Google attracted a loyal following among the growing number of <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Internet">Internet</a> users, who liked its simple design.<span>[</span>11<span>]</span>
Off-page factors (such as PageRank and hyperlink analysis) were
considered as well as on-page factors (such as keyword frequency, <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Meta tags">meta tags</a>,
headings, links and site structure) to enable Google to avoid the kind
of manipulation seen in search engines that only considered on-page
factors for their rankings. Although PageRank was more difficult to <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Gaming the system">game</a>, webmasters had already developed link building tools and schemes to influence the <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Inktomi (company)">Inktomi</a>
search engine, and these methods proved similarly applicable to gaming
PageRank. Many sites focused on exchanging, buying, and selling links,
often on a massive scale. Some of these schemes, or <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Link farm">link farms</a>, involved the creation of thousands of sites for the sole purpose of <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Spamdexing">link spamming</a>.<span></span><span></span><br />
By 2004, search engines had incorporated a wide range of undisclosed
factors in their ranking algorithms to reduce the impact of link
manipulation. In June 2007, <i>The New York Times'</i> Saul Hansell stated Google ranks sites using more than 200 different signals.<span></span><span></span> The leading search engines, <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Google">Google</a>, <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Bing">Bing</a>, and <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Yahoo">Yahoo</a>,
do not disclose the algorithms they use to rank pages. Some SEO
practitioners have studied different approaches to search engine
optimization, and have shared their personal opinions<span>..</span><span></span>Patents related to search engines can provide information to better understand search engines.<span></span><span></span><br />
In 2005, Google began personalizing search results for each user.
Depending on their history of previous searches, Google crafted results
for logged in users.<span></span><span></span>In 2008, Bruce Clay said that "ranking is dead" because of <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Personalized search">personalized search</a>.
He opined that it would become meaningless to discuss how a website
ranked, because its rank would potentially be different for each user
and each search.<span></span><span></span><br />
In 2007, Google announced a campaign against paid links that transfer PageRank.<span></span><span></span>On June 15, 2009, Google disclosed that they had taken measures to mitigate the effects of PageRank sculpting by use of the <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Nofollow">nofollow</a> attribute on links. <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Matt Cutts">Matt Cutts</a>,
a well-known software engineer at Google, announced that Google Bot
would no longer treat nofollowed links in the same way, in order to
prevent SEO service providers from using nofollow for PageRank
sculpting.<span> </span><span></span>As a result of this change the usage of nofollow leads to evaporation
of pagerank. In order to avoid the above, SEO engineers developed
alternative techniques that replace nofollowed tags with obfuscated <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Javascript">Javascript</a> and thus permit PageRank sculpting. Additionally several solutions have been suggested that include the usage of <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Iframe">iframes</a>, <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Flash animation">Flash</a> and Javascript.<span></span><span></span><br />
In December 2009, Google announced it would be using the web search
history of all its users in order to populate search results.<span></span><span></span><br />
On June 8, 2010 a new web indexing system called <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Google Caffeine">Google Caffeine</a>
was announced. Designed to allow users to find news results, forum
posts and other content much sooner after publishing than before, Google
caffeine was a change to the way Google updated its index in order to
make things show up quicker on Google than before. According to Carrie
Grimes, the software engineer who announced Caffeine for Google,
"Caffeine provides 50 percent fresher results for web searches than our
last index...<span></span><span></span><br />
Google Instant,
real-time-search, was introduced in late 2010 in an attempt to make
search results more timely and relevant. Historically site
administrators have spent months or even years optimizing a website to
increase search rankings. With the growth in popularity of social media
sites and blogs the leading engines made changes to their algorithms to
allow fresh content to rank quickly within the search results.<span> </span><span></span><br />
In February 2011, Google announced the <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Google Panda">Panda</a>
update, which penalizes websites containing content duplicated from
other websites and sources. Historically websites have copied content
from one another and benefited in search engine rankings by engaging in
this practice, however Google implemented a new system which punishes
sites whose content is not unique.<span> </span><span></span><br />
In April 2012, Google launched the <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Google Penguin">Google Penguin</a>
update the goal of which was to penalize websites that used
manipulative techniques to improve their rankings on the search engine. <span></span><br />
In September 2013, Google released the <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" title="Google Hummingbird">Google Hummingbird</a> update, an algorithm change designed to improve Google's natural language processing and semantic understanding of web pages.<br />

Search engine optimization is a method of getting your website to rank
higher in search engines—such as Google, Yahoo or Bing. A search engine
optimization campaign pairs on-site optimization with off-site tactics,
which means you make changes to your site itself while building a
portfolio of natural looking back links to increase your organic
rankings. When Internet users search for your products or services, your
website needs to be the first one they find. <acronym title="search engine optimization">SEO</acronym> helps

Well….we all now know what Matt Cutts, head of webspam at <a href="http://www.google.co.uk/" title="Google">Google</a>,
does on his Christmas day. And I’m pretty sure it’s the same as most of
us – post on the Google Webmaster Help forum. No, you don’t? Strange.<br />
It’s pretty good of him to be honest, though it is a bit wierd also.
And apparently it’s actually a Cutts tradition, and he does it every
year. I know where I’ll be next Christmas day!<br />
With a single line comment on a fairly innocuous thread (to view the entire thread in question click <a href="https://productforums.google.com/forum/#%21topic/webmasters/O178PwARnZw/discussion">here</a>), Matt has managed to stir up the entire <a href="http://www.seo-creare.co.uk/" title="seo">SEO</a>
industry, with many a debate and argument generated since. This, in no
small part, is attributable to the intentional vagueness in his
delivery.<br />
On a post regarding the value of press releases towards SEO, Matt had this to say;<br />
<em>“Note: I wouldn’t expect links from press release web sites to benefit your rankings, however.”</em><br />
Now, there are, and have been many in SEO that have used press
release websites as a form of link building. Write a press release – it
doesn’t matter too much if it’s not newsworthy – include a couple of
external links, submit to a non-discriminatory press release website and
wait for your rankings to improve.<br />
From Matt’s comment, it seems clear to me that this form of “PR
solely for the benefit of SEO” is what he is targeting. Many have
believed for a while now that Google does not take great value from the
external links to a site from the press release website itself. Many so
called press release sites do not have the greatest quality control, and
in essence a link from those sites is no better than a paid link on any
other site.<br />
However, this is no sly announcement of a Google update – Matt is
clearly just stating a fact of their algorithm. Therefore this news
really should not affect your current marketing strategy. Press releases
still have great value and should not be ignored because of this
comment.<br />
If done correctly, press releases are an effective method of letting
the wider public know about your news. But only if you ensure that your
content is newsworthy. This a big ‘if’ too – many will write a press
release on a topic that really isn’t news to anyone else but the writer.
So what is newsworthy? Maybe an introduction of a new product, that was
backed by research into a given field. Maybe the start up of a new
company.<br />
The goal of a press release should be the enhanced visibilty of your
message, not the increase in your rankings. Journalists still use press
release websites, and if they see your content and like it then
hopefully they’ll include it within whatever news medium they work with –
be that online, print or other. Don’t expect a link, even a citation
will give your site and company great value.<br />
And don’t <strong>not</strong> include a link either – you want your
target readers (journalists, influencers and customers) to be able to
find out more about your company, and your website is the best way to do
this.<br />
To conclude; if you feel you have a newsworthy announcement that you
want to promote then you should include a press release as part of your
marketing strategy. It will only help the visibility of your message. If
you go in with this attitude then you have nothing to fear – and who
knows, if it’s good enough you might even gain a few rankings too<br />

SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” It is the process of
getting traffic from the “free,” “organic,” “editorial” or “natural”
listings on search engines. All major search engines such as <a href="http://searchengineland.com/guide/google">Google</a>, <a href="http://searchengineland.com/guide/yahoo">Yahoo</a> and <a href="http://searchengineland.com/guide/bing">Bing</a>
have such results, where web pages and other content such as videos or
local listings are shown and ranked based on what the search engine
considers most relevant to users. Payment isn’t involved, as it is with <a href="http://searchengineland.com/guide/what-is-paid-search">paid search ads</a></div>

Not all website's can be indexed properly by the search engines. As a
result you may pay £1000’s for the design and when you come to use an <a href="http://www.seo-creare.co.uk/internet-marketing-service/" title="internet marketing">internet marketing service</a> company, often you have to pay again for the errors to be corrected. <br />
The design of your the site does not match your target
market. The colour scheme and layout are very important as they dictate
to a certain market. For example bright fluorescent colours are
price or emergency related whereas black, navy and maroon are prestige
colours. </div>

<br />
Successful <strong>SEO</strong> is quite simple. It is about delivering the best results for your investment.<br />
Before we start you can see if Search Engine Optimisation - SEO is for you by answering these four questions:<br />
<ol>
<li>Do your customers use search engines to look for your industry/ products/services?</li>
<li>Does your site appear for all the possible phrases your customers may search for on search engines?</li>
<li> Is your website specifically designed to represent your business or service in a way that will attract customers?</li>
<li>Is your price or service competitive in your market?</li>
</ol>
What you must look to ensure is that you choose “the best search engine optimisation company.”<br />
<h2>
The Best SEO Company</h2>
It is vital that you do not choose a specialist Search Engine Optimisation or <strong>SEO company </strong>that only works on this one aspect.<br />
Search Engine Optimisation (<strong>SEO)</strong> is only one of the major components. The industry falls into four main skill sets, which are:<br />
<ul>
<li>Web Design & <a href="http://www.seo-creare.co.uk/web-design/" title="website design services">Website Marketing</a></li>
<li>Search Engine Optimisation</li>
<li>Web functionality</li>
<li>Internet marketing</li>
</ul>
In order to achieve the best results you have to take important
elements from each area. Here are some aspects from each category that
you may find interesting</div>

SEO is an acronym for "search engine optimization" or "search engine
optimizer." Deciding to hire an SEO is a big decision that can
potentially improve your site and save time, but you can also risk
damage to your site and reputation. Make sure to research the potential
advantages as well as the damage that an irresponsible SEO can do to
your site. Many SEOs and other agencies and consultants provide useful
services for website owners, including:<br />
<ul>
<li>Review of your site content or structure</li>
<li>Technical advice on website development: for example, hosting, redirects, error pages, use of JavaScript</li>
<li>Content development</li>
<li>Management of online business development campaigns</li>
<li>Keyword research</li>
<li>SEO training</li>
<li>Expertise in specific markets and geographies.</li>
</ul>
Keep in mind that the Google search results page includes organic
search results and often paid advertisement (denoted by the heading
"Sponsored Links") as well. Advertising with Google won't have any
effect on your site's presence in our search results. Google never
accepts money to include or rank sites in our search results, and it
costs nothing to appear in our organic search results. Free resources
such as <a href="http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools">Webmaster Tools</a>, the official <a href="http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/">Webmaster Central blog</a>, and our <a href="http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Webmasters?hl=en">discussion forum</a> can provide you with a great deal of information about how to optimize your site for organic search.
<br />
Before beginning your search for an SEO, it's a great idea to become an
educated consumer and get familiar with how search engines work. We
recommend starting here:<br />
<ul>
<li><a href="http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35769">Google Webmaster Guidelines</a></li>
<li><a href="http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=70897">Google 101: How Google crawls, indexes and serves the web.</a></li>
</ul>
If you're thinking about hiring an SEO, the earlier the better. A
great time to hire is when you're considering a site redesign, or
planning to launch a new site. That way, you and your SEO can ensure
that your site is designed to be search engine-friendly from the bottom
up. However, a good SEO can also help improve an existing site.<br />
Some useful questions to ask an SEO include:<br />
<ul>
<li>Can you show me examples of your previous work and share some success stories?</li>
<li>Do you follow the Google Webmaster Guidelines?</li>
<li>Do you offer any online marketing services or advice to complement your organic search business?</li>
<li>What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe? How do you measure your success?</li>
<li>What's your experience in my industry?</li>
<li>What's your experience in my country/city?</li>
<li>What's your experience developing international sites?</li>
<li>What are your most important SEO techniques?</li>
<li>How long have you been in business?</li>
<li>How can I expect to communicate with you? Will you share with me all
the changes you make to my site, and provide detailed information about
your recommendations and the reasoning behind them?</li>
</ul>
While SEOs can provide clients with valuable services, some unethical
SEOs have given the industry a black eye through their overly
aggressive marketing efforts and their attempts to manipulate search
engine results in unfair ways. Practices that violate our guidelines may
result in a negative adjustment of your site's presence in Google, or
even the removal of your site from our index. Here are some things to
consider:<br />
<ul>
<li><strong> Be wary of SEO firms and web consultants or agencies that send you email out of the blue.</strong>
Amazingly, we get these spam emails too:<br />
<blockquote>
<em>"Dear google.com,<br />
I visited your website and noticed that you are not listed in most of the major search engines and directories..."</em>
</blockquote>
Reserve the same skepticism for unsolicited email about search engines as you do for "burn fat at night"
diet pills or requests to help transfer funds from deposed dictators.<br />
</li>
<li><strong> No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.</strong>
Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a "special
relationship" with Google, or advertise a "priority submit" to Google.
There is no priority submit for Google. In fact, the only way to submit a
site to Google directly is through our <a href="http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl">Add URL</a> page or by submitting a <a href="http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=40318">Sitemap</a> and you can do this yourself at no cost whatsoever.<br />
</li>
<li><strong>Be careful if a company is secretive or won't clearly explain what they intend to do.</strong>
Ask for explanations if something is unclear. If an SEO creates
deceptive or misleading content on your behalf, such as doorway pages or
"throwaway" domains, your site could be removed entirely from Google's
index. Ultimately, you are responsible for the actions of any companies
you hire, so it's best to be sure you know exactly how they intend to
"help" you. If an SEO has FTP access to your server, they should be
willing to explain all the changes they are making to your site.<br />
</li>
<li><strong>You should never have to link to an SEO.</strong>Avoid
SEOs that talk about the power of "free-for-all" links, link popularity
schemes, or submitting your site to thousands of search engines. These
are typically useless exercises that don't affect your ranking in the
results of the major search engines -- at least, not in a way you would
likely consider to be positive.<br />
</li>
<li><strong>Choose wisely.</strong> While you consider whether
to go with an SEO, you may want to do some research on the industry.
Google is one way to do that, of course. You might also seek out a few
of the cautionary tales that have appeared in the press, including this
article on one particularly aggressive SEO: <a href="http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2002002970_nwbizbriefs12.html">http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2002002970_nwbizbriefs12.html</a>.
While Google doesn't comment on specific companies, we've encountered
firms calling themselves SEOs who follow practices that are clearly
beyond the pale of accepted business behavior. Be careful.<br />
</li>
<li><strong>Be sure to understand where the money goes.</strong>While
Google never sells better ranking in our search results, several other
search engines combine pay-per-click or pay-for-inclusion results with
their regular web search results. Some SEOs will promise to rank you
highly in search engines, but place you in the advertising section
rather than in the search results. A few SEOs will even change their bid
prices in real time to create the illusion that they "control" other
search engines and can place themselves in the slot of their choice.
This scam doesn't work with Google because our advertising is clearly
labeled and separated from our search results,
but be sure to ask any SEO you're considering which fees go toward
permanent inclusion and which apply toward temporary advertising.<br />
</li>
<li><strong>What are the most common abuses a website owner is likely to encounter?</strong></li>
One common scam is the creation of "shadow" domains that funnel users
to a site by using deceptive redirects. These shadow domains often will
be owned by the SEO who claims to be working on a client's behalf.
However, if the relationship sours, the SEO may point the domain to a
different site, or even to a competitor's domain. If that happens, the
client has paid to develop a competing site owned entirely by the SEO.<br />
Another illicit practice is to place "doorway" pages loaded with
keywords on the client's site somewhere. The SEO promises this will make
the page more relevant for more queries. This is inherently false since
individual pages are rarely relevant for a wide range of keywords. More
insidious, however, is that these doorway pages often contain hidden
links to the SEO's other clients as well. Such doorway pages drain away
the link popularity of a site and route it to the SEO and its other
clients, which may include sites with unsavory or illegal content. <br />
<li><strong>What are some other things to look out for?</strong></li>
There are a few warning signs that you may be dealing with a rogue
SEO. It's far from a comprehensive list, so if you have any doubts, you
should trust your instincts. By all means, feel free to walk away if the
SEO:<br />
<ul>
<li>owns shadow domains</li>
<li>puts links to their other clients on doorway pages</li>
<li>offers to sell keywords in the address bar</li>
<li>doesn't distinguish between actual search results and ads that appear on search results pages</li>
<li>guarantees ranking, but only on obscure, long keyword phrases you would get anyway</li>
<li>operates with multiple aliases or falsified WHOIS info</li>
<li>gets traffic from "fake" search engines, spyware, or scumware</li>
<li>has had domains removed from Google's index or is not itself listed in Google</li>
</ul>
If you feel that you were deceived by an SEO in some way, you may want to report it.<br />

The world of SEO is complex, but most people can easily understand
the basics. Even a small amount of knowledge can make a big difference.
For the most part, SEO education is free and available on the web,
including guides like this. Combine this with a little practice and you
are well on your way to becoming a guru.<br />
Depending on your time commitment, willingness to learn, and
complexity of your website(s), you may decide you need an expert to
handle things for you. Firms that practice SEO can vary; some have a
highly specialized focus, while others take a more broad and general
approach. Optimizing a web site for search engines can require looking
at so many unique elements that many practitioners of SEO (SEOs)
consider themselves to be in the broad field of optimization and website
strategy. <br />
Still, even in this case, it's good to have a firm grasp of the core concepts. </div>
